Definition of a Monitor

Monitor: An informative Cathode-Ray tube that displays things like a TV… Such a pictures, art, music, videos, and other things.


History of the Monitor


1960- The first minicomputer was invented. This monitor had a keyboard attached to the screen. This computer was an important step toward personal computers.
1960- The first commercial computer with a monitor is sold.
1961- People started using the Cathode Ray tube monitor.
1962- The Monochrome Monitor was invented.
1963- Liquid Crystal Display technology was developed.
1965- The first Transistor-Transistor Logic (TTL) was developed by Texas Instruments.
1965- Ivan Sutherland creates and presents the first "virtual reality" display.
1970- Blinking green text based monitors where the only monitors available for computers.
1976 to 1979- Computer Monitors were big boxes that came with the a keyboard attached.
1981- IBM produced the mono display adapter that showed 2 colors and had a refresh rate of 50hz. This monitor had a Transistor-Transistor Logic. This is a digital circuit where the output is derived from two transistors.
1981- IBM created the color graphics adapter. This monitor had 160x200 pixels and could show four colors. It had a 60Hz refresh rate and was a Transistor-Transistor Logic monitor.
1981- IBM invented the first color graphic monitor. This monitor could render four colors and had a resolution of 320 pixels horizontally by 200 pixels vertically.
1981- IBM invented the red green blue intensity. This monitor had a 640x200 pixel screen and showed four colors, red green blue and white. It was a TTL and could refresh at a rate of 60Hz.

1982- IBM produced the Hercules display adapter that had 720x340 pixels. This screen had a refresh rate of 50Hz and was a TTL.
1984- IBM created the enhanced graphic monitor. This monitor showed 16 colors and a resolution of 640x350 pixels.
1987- The multicolor graphic array monitor was created by IBM. This monitor had a 1024x768 pixel monitor that showed 256 different colors. This was an analog monitor that had a refresh rate of 43.5Hz.
1987- The video graphic array was produced. These monitors where so successful that some of these computer monitors are still in use. This same monitor was produced again later on in the year with a 1600x1200 pixel screen with 32 more colors and a refresh rate of 85Hz.
1990- The extended graphics array was invented. This monitor offered 800x600 pixel resolution. By having a monitor that had 800x600 pixel resolution you could see 65,536 different colors. This monitor had a refresh rate of 70Hz.
1990- VESA invented the super VGA monitor with a 1600x1200 monitor. This screen had 256 colors and had a refresh rate of 60Hz.
1991- The extended VGA monitor was created by VESA. This monitor has a 1600x1200 pixel monitor with 256 colors. This was an analog monitor with a 60Hz refresh rate screen.

Monitors come in many different shapes and sizes today. It may take some research to find the right one.
First, ask yourself these questions:
1. Where is my computer now or where do I want it to be?
2. Do I need multiple monitors?
3. How big of a monitor can I fit into the space that I have? How big of a monitor is too big?
4. What will I mainly be using this monitor for? Music? Movies? Pictures? General Use?
5. What kind of computer will I be using? PC? Mac? Laptop? Desktop?

  • Today, many televisions also double as computer monitors. If you are creating a media station or just a place to relax and listen to music, watch movies, and watch TV, then this would be an option to consider.
  • Using multiple monitors can increase productivity and is easy to do. The connection cable costs about $20.00 and can double your productivity and your multitasking ability. You could move one item to one screen while you are working on another. This is useful for research and for web browsing.
  • If you are using a desktop, what will it be used for? Gaming? Work? School? Entertainment?

The main disadvantages that CRT monitors have are:
  • Very large and heavy
  • Uses a lot of power
  • Generates a lot of heat
  • Can strain your eyes
  • Is not always compatible with the newer technology coming out or already out.

The main type of monitor on the market today is the LCD, which has especially become popular because of it’s smaller size, lighter weight, and newer technology than the CRT monitor.

The main advantages that LCD monitors have are:

  • Small and light
  • Energy-efficient
  • Don’t hurt your eyes as much
  • Newer technology, also more technology compatible with
The main disadvantages of LCD monitors are:
  • Blurry images outside of native resolution
  • Moving images can blur
  • Some models have poor color quality

Then, ask an expert or other buyers. Forums are a great way to communicate with other consumers. Also, it is a good idea to talk to an expert. Call or visit your local electronics store and ask someone who works there.They probably have a good deal of knowledge concerning computer monitors. They may ask you a few questions like "What size are you looking for?", "What price range are you looking in?", or "What will you be using this monitor for?" so have some answers prepared. Over all, CRT Monitor prices are ranged from 125-200 dollars. Today, they are hard to find and have very poor quality.

LCD Monitors have great resolution. They range in prices by size. 19” monitors go for about $170.00, while 20” monitors go for $190.00. 22” are also about $190.00. 24” monitors are $330.00. 26” range from $400.00 to $450.00. 28” are priced $450.00 to $480.00. And last but not least, 30” range from $1000.00 to $1300.00. Many people go for smaller sizes because of their lower prices and their convenient sizes, so a good choice when buying a monitor would be from 19” to 22”.

There are a lot of different types of touch screen computer monitors that you can buy these days. There are a lot to chose from because most of the major computer brands, like DELL, have at least one model of touch screen monitor out.

Since, there is a wide variety of brands, sizes, contrasts, brightness, sharpness, and other features, a consumer can almost pick exactly what they want in a monitor for their computer. Also, because of the wide variety, the prices also vary greatly. I found monitors at Be st Buy and Newegg.com from as low as $300 all the way to $1800. The price mostly depends on what features you want in your monitor.

Flat screenmonitors come in various styles and sizes. The average 17" monitor usually costs from $100-200 dollars. 22" monitors can range from $250-350. 26" monitors are much more expensive ranging from $1,000-1,500. Almost all new monitors including LCD, touch, and CRT are now flat screen. Most people buy 17" monitors because they are a reasonably sized and are at a good price.

Future Uses of Computer Monitors

This is the Microsoft SurfaceUnit. It allows you to do everything from the monitor so you don't have to use a mouse or anything else. It also allows a lot of other cool features. Future uses are going to evolve from other products and newer versions of monitors such as the touchscreen. Some possible future uses for computer monitors can be not having to use a mouse of keyboard, as said above. Not many things have been said about future use, because they are still researching and coming up with new ideas.
