Cell Phones


A cell phone, also known as a mobile phone or cellular phone, is a type of short-wave analog or digital telecommunication in which the subscriber receives connection from the cell phone to a nearby transmitter. The span a transmitter covers is called a “cell”. As the cell phone moves from one cell or area to another, the mobile phone is passed on to the closer transmitter.
A cellular phone is not to be confused with a cordless phone which has short connection with the local phone outlet.

How Cell Phones Work

Parts of a Cell Phone

The cell phone is made up of several different components; the circuit board, antenna, LCD screens, a keyboard, microphone, speaker, and a battery. The circuit board is the brain of the cell phone; it keeps the phone working and allows for the rest of the parts to communicate. The antenna is important to the cell phone because it’s the part that connects the cell phone to a cellular network. The two types of antennae used in cell phone are external and internal. External are on the outside of the phone and internal antennae are built into the phone (internal antennae are more common in modern cell phones). LCD screens allow us to view information on the cell phone. The keyboard allows you to input data into the cell phone and dial numbers. The speaker and microphone are also important parts of the cell phone, they allow you to speak and listen to the person on the other line. The battery is the component that powers your cell phone; they can be recharged with AC and car chargers, battery sizes vary from cell phone to cell phone.

Cell Phone Frequencies

Most just know the cell phone as a simple device that calls. In fact, the cell phone’s closest ancestor is a radio.
Before the recent cell phone was released, people used a device known as the radio telephone in cars. The system consisted of one central antenna tower per city with approximately twenty-five channels. Because there were not many channels, only a few people could use the radio telephone at one time.
Soon enough, the radio telephone evolved into the cell phone we know today. One difference between radio telephone frequencies and cell phone frequencies is that cell phones have more towers with more channels allowing for more simultaneous use. In fact, cell phones can communicate on at least 1, 664 channels. Also, the cell phone is a full duplex device meaning each user is on a separate frequency contrary to a half duplex device (walkie-talkie) where two people communicating share a frequency. Finally, a cell phone has a much greater range than any other wireless communication device. A typical, analog cell phone system carrier uses around 800 frequencies in one city. The carrier company then chops the city into cells that are hexagons about ten square miles in size. Each cell consists of a base station that has a tower and a small building with radio equipment.

Cell Phone Channels

To recap, cells in an analog cell phone system, each of which are ten square miles, cover an area in a hexagonal tessellation. Each cell includes one seventh of all the carrier’s available duplex voice channels. Because of this arrangement, the frequencies do not collide.
So, if each carrier has 832 frequencies per city and each call requires two frequencies, because it is a duplex channel, there are 56 voice channels per cell.
Next, cell phones have low power transmitters gaining two advantages over high power transmitters like a CB radio. First, because transmissions from phones and the tower can not travel a great distance outside of the cell, they may reuse the same signal. Also, low power transmitters do not consume as much battery life, batteries can be smaller allowing for smaller phones.

The SID and MTSO

Everyone knows each cell phone has a number, but what other codes are associated with the phone. These codes not only identify the user, but they also identify the phone’s owner and the service provider.
Even when you first turn on the phone, it searches for the SID (System Identification Code), a five-digit code that is assigned to each service carrier by the Federal Communications Commission on the control channel, a special frequency which the phone and base tower use to communicate with each other. If a phone cannot find the control channel, it is out of range and has no service.
Next, when the phone receives the SID code from the tower, it compares the code to the one stored in the memory. If the two match, then it acknowledges that it is communicating with the home system.
Also, as the cell phone is searching for an SID code, it transmits a registration request. This allows for the MTSO to store your phones location to be stored in the database, so when someone calls it knows which phone to ring.
After the MTSO locates your phone, it decides on which frequencies the call will occur. Then, the MTSO tells your phone (through the control channel) which frequency pair the call will be on. When the tower and phone switch onto the appropriate frequencies, the call is connected.
If you are moving during the call, the cell in which you are moving to monitors your signal’s increase while the base station in which you are notices the signal waning. Eventually, the two base stations communicate with each other through the MTSO to communicate when the call will switch onto the stronger frequency.
If the cell to which you are traveling is covered by a different server, the call is not dropped, rather it will be handed off to another service provider. If this happens, you are considered to be roaming.

The Differences between Analog and Digital Cell Phone Technology

Both of these types of communication technologies use radio technology. However, they use it in different ways.
Primarily, the difference is digital can fit more calls in one bandwidth. How, you ask? First, your voice is converted into binary code to compress it which allows three to ten times more calls than an analog service.
Some digital systems use a process known as frequency-shift keying(FSK) to send data between AMPS. This process uses two frequencies, one for 1s in the binary code and another for the 0s in the binary code. Because of the two frequencies, FSK must switch rapidly between the two in order to relay the information from phone to tower and vice versa.

Inside a Cell Phone

A cell phone contains the following:
· A Circuit Board: The circuit board is the brain of the phone. Some examples of chips located on the circuit board are the analog-to-digital chip which translates your outgoing, analog message to digital, the digital single processor which performs single-manipulation calculations quickly, and the microprocessor which helps operate the LCD and keyboard and does other functions.
· An LCD screen: The screen displays information.
· A Keyboard: The keyboard is an input device.
· A Microphone: The microphone is also an input device.
· A Speaker: The speaker lets you hear information and is about the size if a dime.
· A Battery: The battery powers the phone.

History of Cell Phones

Inventor of the Cell Phone: Martin Cooper

Martin Cooper was born on December 26, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up during the Great Depression, and his parents were Ukrainian immigrants. In, 1950 he got his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Before his life in technology, he joined the Reserve Officer Training Corps. He served as on a US Navy Destroyer during the Korean War. After the war, Cooper started working with Teletype. He then moved to Motorola in 1954. While working at Motorola he was still able to go to school. He ended up getting his Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. In 1960, Cooper fixed the flaw in the crystals Motorola made for its radios. With this step forward it allowed them to mass-produce the first quartz crystals to be used in watches. After Cooper’s outstanding work in the Company he was promoted to the head of the car phone division, but Cooper was thinking much farther ahead then just a car phone. He knew that he could make a device small enough and light enough to be made portable. In 1973, Cooper started working on his invention. It only took him 90 days to make his first prototype.

Cooper, his engineers, and his boss, John Mitchell, were named on the patent “Radio Telephone System” filed on October 17, 1973. Cooper was officially named the inventor of the first. portable cell phone on April 3rd. Cooper said that he was inspired to make his invention by watching Captain Kirk use his communicator on the show Star Trek. When the 1st Cell Phone came out the listing price was $4,000. Cooper ended up leaving the company before they ever started selling his creations though.In 1992, Cooper joined Richard Roy and Arnaud Saffari in the company ArrayComm. This company started creating more efficient cell phones.

The First Mobile Phones

The cell phone’s origins can be traced back to the two way radios used by the police. The first mobile phone was used by the Swedish police in 1946, unfortunately, this phone ran off of the battery of the car it was installed in, and it only took six calls to drain the battery. In 1947, D.H. Ring from Bell Labs created an important part of modern cell phones: the hexagonal cell. Later, another engineer from Bell Labs had the idea of making radio towers transmit in three directions, rather than only two. In 1967, mobile phones were widely available, but could only send and receive calls if both phones were within a certain area; if either phone moved outside this area, the call would disconnect. In 1970, the technology for transferring calls from one area to another was developed, but was not put into use until 1982.

How the Cell Phone Has Changed

The Motorola Company released the first “cell” phones (First Generation) in 1983 that used analog technology. These phones were used in vehicles such as police cars or trucks, and were permanently placed in the floorboards of the automobiles. When these phones were accessible beyond that of the car, they were large and inconvenient. The use of these phones was used mostly for “voice traffic,” but people were feeling uncomfortable with others being able to hear there conversations. In 1990, the Second Generation phones that used digital technology were used, and the first phone call was made. It was faster and quieter than the first generation phones, and therefore became more popular. They became smaller and used more energy efficient applications. The Third Generation is what is most commonly used today. It uses digital technology and can send not only voice data, but also other things such as e-mails and internet. There are researchers who are working hard to start making a fourth generation phone that will bring the user these applications faster.


The specifications of cell phones involve the different abilities and tools each different phone can carry out. The specifications depend on the carrier and the model. Some of these include color, weight, camera/video capability, battery life, model case, and memory ability.

Specification options for phones have changed greatly over the years. They have evolved from having a camera in the phone being the newest and greatest thing to 3G technology and entertainment qualities. 3G coverage stands for 3rd generation. This means that the network coverage works faster, and has more advanced capabilities. The invention of the 3G makes cell phones more unique and advanced than they already were becoming.

Today you can choose from many different specification options such as Internet, television, mp3 abilities, e-mailing and Bluetooth (used for sending information over short distances). These specifications are more luxurious to the user. Not every cell phone has the ability to use these different specifics. It depends on the make of the phone, the carrier, and the model’s ability to process. Using the TV, GPS, radio, etc can take much battery, and their reliability is always questionable. The price of these also determines the quality of the phone and the reliability of the network. These options are not required by as many people don’t want or need them and they make the phone fairly expensive. This makes the price of the cell phone one of the most concerned specifics of the phone.

Aside from cell phone usages, the colors have gotten a large variety and change as well. Starting from colors like silver and black, they have gone to more vibrant colors such as orange and green. Designs and patterns have also been influenced by media and the ever-changing style of the general consumers. Cases for the outside of the phone have changed the way cell phone designs are seen. These outer cases that are purchased separately are usually based on the way cell phones operate: whether they flip, slide, or show their numeric keypad only.

Most importantly it allows for an emergency response team to pinpoint your exact location incase you are ever in need of assistance. Global Positioning Systems are paving the way to a safer and more efficient world and their addition to cell phones is only hastening the process.

Although the future of cell phones is not clear, we can all guess at how they will evolve. A new idea for a cell phone is the Nokia Morph. They are planning for it to be able to fold up for keyboard use and even be able to scrunch up like a watch around your wrist. Also in the future of cell phones is the ability to offer more games, be a full TV, and be used as a credit card. How cool is that?! Companies are working to make the internet connections more like a laptop, and they are working out a way to make cable work on a cell phone. Improvements are being made to the camera capability. In the years to come, you can expect cell phones to become, sleeker, faster and more efficient!
